The most common questions about the exam — answered clearly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How important is Step 2 CK after Step 1 went pass/fail?

Critical — it's now the primary numeric score residency programs use to rank applicants, especially for competitive specialties.

When should I take Step 2 CK?

Most students take it during M3 (after core clerkships) or early M4. Earlier is better if applying to competitive specialties.

What score should I aim for?

≥240 is competitive for most specialties; ≥250 for dermatology, plastic surgery, orthopedics; 230 is solid for primary care and family medicine.

Best resources?

UWorld Qbank, NBME practice exams, Online MedEd or Boards & Beyond Step 2 lectures, and Step 2 Secrets or Master the Boards.

How is Step 2 CK different from Step 1?

Step 1 was basic sciences; Step 2 CK is clinical reasoning. Vignettes are longer, focus on next steps in management, prognosis, and communication.
