1. What Is the ASVAB?

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a standardised test administered by the US Military Entrance Processing Command (MEPCOM). It serves two primary purposes: determining whether you qualify for military enlistment through the Armed Forces Qualifying Test (AFQT) score, and identifying which military occupational specialties (MOS, ratings, or Air Force Specialty Codes) you are best suited for.

More than one million people take the ASVAB each year, including high school and post-secondary students exploring their options through the Student Testing Program, as well as active applicants at Military Entrance Processing Stations (MEPS). The test is free to take and scores are valid for two years.

2. Test Format and Subtests

The ASVAB consists of 10 subtests covering a wide range of academic and technical knowledge areas. At MEPS, the test is taken in the Computer Adaptive Test (CAT-ASVAB) format, which adapts question difficulty based on your performance. The paper-and-pencil version (MET-site ASVAB) is also available at some locations.

*Verbal Expression (VE) is a derived score combining Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension. It is not a standalone subtest.

3. Understanding AFQT Scores

Your AFQT score is a percentile score ranging from 1 to 99. It represents how you performed compared to a nationally representative sample of 18–23-year-olds. An AFQT score of 50 means you scored as well as or better than 50% of that reference group.

The AFQT is calculated from four subtests: Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), Mathematics Knowledge (MK), and Verbal Expression (VE), which is itself derived from Word Knowledge (WK) and Paragraph Comprehension (PC). The formula is:

AFQT = AR + MK + (2 × VE)

Raw score converted to a percentile (1–99)

AFQT scores are grouped into categories. Categories I–IIIA (scores 50–99) are considered above average. Categories IIIB–IVA (31–49) are acceptable for most branches. Category IVB and below (1–30) generally make enlistment difficult or impossible without significant waivers.

4. Branch Minimum Score Requirements

Each branch of the military sets its own minimum AFQT score. These are the standard minimums for high school diploma holders (GED holders typically need higher scores):

31
Army
35
Navy
32
Marine Corps
36
Air Force / Space Force
40
Coast Guard
31–50
National Guard

These are minimums — to be competitive and access desirable jobs, aim for 50+. The Air Force and Coast Guard are the most selective and have higher standards in practice despite the listed minimums.

5. MOS Composite Scores

Beyond the AFQT, each branch uses composite scores (also called line scores or aptitude area scores) derived from specific subtest combinations to determine job qualification. For the Army, these include:

Other branches use similar composite systems with different names. Maximising your score across all 10 subtests gives you the widest selection of occupational specialties.

6. How to Prepare

Most people can significantly improve their ASVAB score with focused preparation. Here is a structured approach:

1. Take a diagnostic test
Start with a full-length practice ASVAB to establish your baseline AFQT and identify your weakest subtests. This tells you where to invest your study time.
2. Focus on AFQT sections first
AR, MK, WK, and PC have the highest impact on your overall eligibility. If your goal is basic enlistment, master these four before studying other subtests.
3. Build your math foundation
AR and MK together make up half of your AFQT. Review pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, and arithmetic word problems. Many test-takers significantly improve their math scores with focused review.
4. Expand vocabulary daily
WK tests synonym recognition and context-based vocabulary. Reading widely and using vocabulary flashcards for 15 minutes daily can noticeably improve this subtest.
5. Study technical subtests for MOS goals
If you have a specific job in mind, research which composite score it requires and target those subtests (EI, MC, GS, AS) accordingly.
6. Take timed practice tests regularly
Simulate real test conditions. Time management matters — particularly on AR where 36 minutes for 30 word problems requires efficient pacing.

8. Frequently Asked Questions

How long are ASVAB scores valid?
ASVAB scores are valid for two years from the date of testing. After two years, you must retest to enlist.
Can I retake the ASVAB?
Yes. After an initial test, you must wait one calendar month before retesting. After a second test, you must wait six months between attempts. Each retest replaces the previous score.
Is the ASVAB the same as the CAT-ASVAB?
The CAT-ASVAB is the computer-adaptive version taken at MEPS. The MET-site ASVAB is the paper version. Both cover the same content but the adaptive format adjusts question difficulty to your performance level.
Do ASVAB scores affect military pay?
Not directly. Military pay is determined by rank and years of service. However, higher ASVAB scores can qualify you for bonuses attached to specific in-demand MOS fields.
What happens if I do not meet the minimum AFQT score?
You are not eligible to enlist until you retest and achieve the required minimum. Your recruiter can advise on study resources and schedule your retest.
