ASVAB Writing Guide
Task types, scoring criteria, and strategies to excel in the writing section.
Writing Overview
The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery tests knowledge in 10 areas to qualify for military enlistment and determine job eligibility. Your AFQT score (Arithmetic Reasoning, Math Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Word Knowledge) determines basic eligibility; line scores determine MOS/AFSC qualification.
Note: ASVAB does not have a dedicated writing section. This guide covers general test preparation.
High-Score Strategies
- 1.AFQT is king โ focus on AR, MK, PC, and WK first.
- 2.Use Kaplan ASVAB Prep or Trivium Test Prep; both include full-length practice tests.
- 3.Build vocabulary daily: learn 10 root words per day (pref-, sub-, ex-, etc.).
- 4.For mechanical comprehension, watch YouTube videos on simple machines โ visual learning helps.
- 5.Mental math speed matters โ practice multiplication tables and percentage shortcuts.
- 6.Don't neglect science subtests if you're targeting technical jobs (cyber, nuclear, avionics).
