Question Types

Chart reading

Interpret sectional aeronautical charts to determine airspace class and altitude limits.

Strategies

  • Magenta = Class E starts at surface or 700ft. Blue = Class E starts at 1,200ft.
  • Look for 'Mode C veil' (30 NM of Class B airports) on charts

Regulation application

Apply Part 107 rules to operational scenarios.

Strategies

  • Maximum altitude: 400 ft AGL (or 400 ft above a structure)
  • Daylight only unless waivered; drone must remain VLOS

General Strategies

  • 1.Study the sectional aeronautical chart legend thoroughly — 15–20% of questions involve chart reading.
  • 2.Memorize airspace classes A–G: ceilings, floors, equipment requirements, and speed limits.
  • 3.METAR reading: practice translating a full METAR into plain English every day for a week.
  • 4.Use Sporty's free Part 107 study course online — it's comprehensive and free.
  • 5.Tony Northrup's Part 107 Drone Pilot Ground School on YouTube is the most popular free resource.
