HSK 4 Writing Guide

Task types, scoring criteria, and strategies to excel in the writing section.

Writing Overview

Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) is China's standardized Mandarin proficiency test. HSK 1–6 tests reading, listening, and writing. HSK 4 (B2 equivalent) is commonly required for Chinese university admission. The new HSK 3.0 (2021+) has 9 levels but HSK 4/5/6 remain widely recognized.

Note: HSK 4 does not have a dedicated writing section. This guide covers general test preparation.

High-Score Strategies

  • 1.Master the official HSK vocabulary lists β€” HSK 4 requires ~1,200 words total (cumulative).
  • 2.Use Anki with the HSK deck β€” spaced repetition is the most efficient way to learn characters.
  • 3.Listen to Chinese daily: HSK-level podcasts (ChinesePod, HSK Online), dramas with subtitles.
  • 4.Writing practice: type characters, not just recognize them β€” typing on a phone builds recall.
  • 5.Grammar points: study 把, θ’«, θ™½η„Ά...δ½†ζ˜―, εͺζœ‰...才... β€” they're tested directly.
  • 6.Take official practice tests from Hanban at chinesetest.cn.
