How IELTS Requirements Work

IELTS Academic is scored on a 9-band scale in 0.5-band increments. Universities typically set a minimum overall band score plus (often) a minimum component score for each of the four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

Most UK and Australian universities require a band 6.5โ€“7.5 overall. Some programmes โ€” particularly Medicine, Nursing, Law, and teacher training โ€” require higher Writing and Speaking scores due to the professional communication demands of those fields.

Component Band Minimums by Programme Type

Beyond the overall band score, programmes in professional fields often require higher scores in specific components. Here are typical component requirements by field:

How to Research IELTS Requirements: Step-by-Step

  1. 1
Go directly to the specific programme page

Do not rely on the university's general international admissions page. Find the specific degree programme page and look for 'Entry Requirements' or 'English Language Requirements.' Scroll to IELTS specifically โ€” different programmes at the same university often have different requirements.

  2. 2
Check both overall and component minimums

Many universities list only the overall band minimum prominently, but mention component minimums in smaller text below. Check carefully. A Writing 7.0 component minimum that you miss can be disqualifying even if your overall is above the threshold.

  3. 3
Check the faculty or school level, not just university level

At large universities (especially UK Russell Group institutions), the faculty sets requirements independently. The Faculty of Medicine has different requirements from the Faculty of Engineering. Always find the most specific page for your programme.

  4. 4
    Note the score validity requirement

IELTS scores are valid for 2 years. Verify that your scores will still be valid at the application deadline AND the programme start date. Some applications close months before the course starts โ€” check both dates.

  5. 5
Confirm IELTS Academic vs. General Training

Universities for academic admissions require IELTS Academic. IELTS General Training (used for immigration and vocational purposes) is not accepted. Your Test Report Form states which type you took.

  6. 6
Email the admissions team for borderline cases

If your score is at the minimum or one 0.5 band below it, contact the admissions team. Some programmes accept borderline applicants with exceptional other credentials, or offer conditional admission pending a language course.

What to Do If Your Score Is Below the Minimum

Option 1: Retake IELTS

There is no waiting period for IELTS retakes. Focus on the specific component that is below the minimum. If Writing is below 7.0 at a 7.0 programme, dedicate your preparation specifically to Task 1 and Task 2 essay skills. Improving a single component by 0.5 band can take 4โ€“8 weeks of focused practice.

Option 2: Pre-sessional English course

Almost all UK and Australian universities with IELTS requirements also offer pre-sessional language courses. These are usually 5โ€“12 weeks of intensive academic English, and successfully completing one satisfies the language requirement for conditional admission. This is a common pathway for students 0.5โ€“1.0 band below the programme minimum.

Option 3: Apply with a conditional offer

Some universities issue conditional offers to students who meet all other criteria but are slightly below the language minimum. The condition is to achieve the required IELTS score before the programme starts. This is common at UK and Australian universities.

Option 4: Submit TOEFL instead

If your TOEFL score meets the equivalent requirement (IELTS 7.0 โ‰ˆ TOEFL 100, IELTS 7.5 โ‰ˆ TOEFL 110, IELTS 6.5 โ‰ˆ TOEFL 90), nearly all universities that accept IELTS also accept TOEFL. Submit whichever score is stronger relative to the programme minimum.

Option 5: Request a waiver

If your previous degree was taught entirely in English, many universities will waive the IELTS requirement. Check the programme's waiver policy and submit evidence of your English-medium study (official transcripts and a letter from your previous institution confirming the language of instruction).

Score Choice Strategy: Which Score to Submit

Unlike the SAT (which has SuperScore), IELTS reports a single test sitting's scores. You cannot mix component scores from different test dates. Here is how to think about which scores to submit:

  • Submit your most recent score if it is your strongest: Universities use the most recent valid IELTS scores when making decisions.
  • You can choose which test dates to send: IELTS allows you to send results from specific test dates (not automatically your most recent). Send the date where all your components met or exceeded the minimum.
  • Do not submit a date where a component is below the minimum: If your best overall band is from a date where Writing was 6.0 and the programme requires Writing 6.5, that date is disqualifying โ€” submit a different date or retake.
  • Multiple sittings can be sent: You can send multiple IELTS TRFs. If your most recent score improved on one component but dropped on another, sending both may not help โ€” check the programme's policy on multiple scores.
Practical tip: When choosing between two IELTS sittings to send, choose the one where all components are above their respective minimums, even if the overall band is slightly lower โ€” component minimums disqualify more applicants than overall minimums.

Exemptions and Waivers

Most universities waive IELTS under conditions similar to TOEFL waivers:

  • English-medium education: Prior degree from a university where English was the language of instruction (typically for 2+ years) โ€” most common waiver
  • Native-English-speaking country: Citizens of UK, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland often exempt
  • TOEFL alternative: Schools accepting IELTS typically accept TOEFL as an alternative and vice versa
  • PTE Academic, Duolingo, Cambridge C1/C2: Many universities now also accept these alternatives
Score equivalency reminder: IELTS 7.5 โ‰ˆ TOEFL 110. IELTS 7.0 โ‰ˆ TOEFL 100. IELTS 6.5 โ‰ˆ TOEFL 90. Most universities publish a conversion chart on their admissions pages.

Strategy Tips

Aim above the minimum

If Oxford requires 7.5, aim for 8.0. If your Writing component is 6.5 and the programme minimum is 7.0, that is an immediate disqualification โ€” focus on that component specifically.

Half-band increments matter

Unlike TOEFL (integer scores), IELTS uses 0.5-band increments. A score of 6.5 is meaningfully different from 7.0. When targeting a 7.0 programme requirement, aim to score 7.5 to ensure test-day variability does not bring you to 6.5.

IELTS scores are valid for 2 years

Plan your test date so your scores remain valid through your application and any deferred admission. If you are applying in September 2026 for a programme starting September 2027, a test taken in August 2025 will be valid.

IELTS on Computer vs. Paper

Universities treat computer-delivered and paper-based IELTS identically. IELTS on Computer is typically available more frequently (multiple times per week at many centers) and has faster results (3โ€“5 days vs. 13 days for paper). If you need scores quickly, IELTS on Computer is worth considering.
