Cosmetology License Scoring Guide

How scores are calculated, what they mean, and how to reach your goal score.

Study Tips

  • 1.Milady's Standard Cosmetology is the primary textbook used in most schools — study from it.
  • 2.Sanitation rules are heavily weighted — memorize EPA-registered disinfectant protocols.
  • 3.pH and color theory overlap in many questions — understand the full color wheel and levels.
  • 4.Use NIC (National Interstate Council) practice exams — many states use NIC as their exam provider.
  • 5.Create anatomy flashcards: facial bones, muscles, and nerves are tested in every state exam.
  • 6.For practical: practice your timing — examiners score both quality AND efficiency.
